Clutter can be categorized as a nuisance, an annoyance and simply the bane of manyís existence. It accumulates so quickly and it seems like it comes out of nowhere. Between you and your family or roommates, there are often multiple people contributing to the clutter. And it can make your rooms feel cramped and look messy. Here are a few tips for cleaning up that clutter and keeping it at bay. Clean: Take note of the areas that attract the most clutter and determine why that type of clutter builds up in that area. Taking control of where and why clutter is piling up will only help you in the future. Once you have a handle of the type of clutter and where itís coming from, sort through it. Throw out or recycle what can be tossed and put away anything that has a storage location. Dust and vacuum the de-cluttered area after de-cluttering. Storage: Having the appropriate storage is essential for clearing up clutter and keeping it from piling back up. Often times clutter accumulates because there is nowhere to put things. Whether itís hooks and shoe storage for entryways and mudrooms or drawers or bookcases for bedrooms or workspaces, storage is essential. Process: Whether itís clutter in your mudroom or entryway, on your dining room table, the chair in your bedroom, or on top of your desk, there must be a process for putting things away and therefore eliminating any chance of clutter. If considering an entryway with optimal storage make sure children hang up their backpacks and coats when they enter the home and store their shoes in the appropriate place. If children usually do their homework on the dining room table then make sure they understand it needs to be picked up each night. Having a small storage container nearby will make this even easier. Eliminating clutter altogether is a feat many cannot conquest, but adding a process will be sure to help. Cleaning and eliminating clutter is the easy part, but keeping that clutter away is a much larger task to undertake. It will take time to remember to put things away or throw out unnecessary things and keep processes in place. However, you will be much happier in a clutter free, clean home. Think of all the extra space you will have to eat, sit and walk! Having a process in place for children, and anyone else for that matter, is essential for having a clutter free home.

We all like a clean home. As many times as we go through our daily and weekly cleaning routines, our homes can still be dirty. Thereís plenty of places in your home that you might be neglecting to clean. These places are germ breeders. Especially to help prevent the spread of cold and flu, itís important to keep these frequently used areas germ-free. The good news is that cleaning often overlooked spots is very simple. Weíll tell you where you need to clean and how with the tips below. 

The Refrigerator Handles

While youíre preparing dinner, itís very likely that you will need to open the fridge door more than once. You may surface clean the outside of the fridge, but often forget the handles that everyone grabs to get in and out of this appliance. You should scrub the handles down on a weekly basis with a mix of hot water and vinegar. 

Your Computer And All The Accessories

You probably spend a lot of time at your desk and at the keyboard of your computer. Think of the times you have spilled things, sneezed on your computer, or just plain sweat while sitting there. Thereís a ton of germs breeding all around your computer and its accessories. Make sure you do more than dust your computer off. Take off the accessories and scrub them every so often. If you have a laptop, turn the unit off and use a damp cloth to wipe it down. 

Toothbrush Holder

While you probably remember to brush your teeth twice a day, you may not remember to clean your toothbrush holder very often. You can easily throw toothbrush holders right in the dishwasher. Also, boil the toothbrushes themselves in water for a few minutes every so often. This is especially important during times of cold and flu to keep viruses from spreading.      

The Faucets

The faucets are perhaps one of the dirtiest places in your entire home. Be sure that youíre cleaning the handles and the faucet itself on a regular basis. You can do this with hot water and dish soap (something thatís already nearby!) For a deeper, disinfecting clean, use a paste of baking soda and vinegar.


These great little inventions protect your tables from having the finish damaged by glasses and cups. Without a cleaning once in awhile, they can build up residue and bacteria. Be sure to give them a once over with warm water and soap.  

Some other areas that could use cleaning in your home:

  • Light switches
  • Placemats
  • Cabinet handles
  • TV remotes
  • Coffee makers

While your home looks clean, you want it to be clean. By following these tips and by paying attention to the most used areas of your home, youíll be on your way to a deep clean that avoids breeding germs.

Often times, certain cleaning rituals are saved for spring-cleaning, certain cleaning rituals that should occur more than once a year. One of those things that fall into this category is your refrigerator. You open your refrigerator, stare into it trying to find something to eat or drink, find that something or not, and then close the fridge. This happens multiple times a day, but how often do you go into your fridge with intentions of cleaning it out? And by, ďclean it out,Ē I donít just mean to toss the nearest thing to you that looks like it morphed into a creature inside of your tupperware. A refrigerator needs a good cleaning every couple of months to avoid any unwanted stenches, difficult clean ups from unknown spills, and expired food/drinks. Here are a few tips to keeping your refrigerator clean: Go Through Every 2-3 Months: Go through your fridge every two to three months. Itís so easy to lose track of what is in your fridge, from throwing leftovers in, to fruit and vegetables, and eggs and milk. And donít forget about your freezer. Check for food that is no longer any good or has past best buy dates and anything in your freezer that looks freezer burnt and throw it away. Wipe down Every 2-3 Months: When you are cleaning out old food from your fridge, take the time to wipe it out too. Spills can happen without you knowing and can leave your fridge sticky, slimy and even stinky. By wiping your fridge out every so often you can avoid those issues. Rotate: After going through the items in your refrigerator and freezer, make sure to rotate any duplicate items. Rotating means to put the oldest item in the front so that you use that one first. This will help ensure that you are eating foods and drinking drinks before they go back therefore causing less waste. This will also help you save money in the long run. It may sound tedious but the more often you do it the less work there will be each time. Happy cleaning!

New England is infamous for its old homes and with old homes comes gorgeous, original hardwood floors. Maybe homebuyers have original flooring at the top of their wishlist when home shopping. While you may know how much you adore your hardwood floors, you may not know how to properly care for them. Keep reading for tips on how to keep your new to you hardwood floors in boast-worthy shape. Preemptively prevent scratches and tough to clean buildup by adding mats to any doors leading outside. Not only do they add a nice visual touch, but more importantly they help prevent dirt and outdoor grime from being tracked over your hardwood floors. You will make daily clean up easier on yourself while saving your floors from potential scratches. Institute a no-shoes in the house policy to further prevent any debris from finding their way throughout your home. You will especially want to avoid wearing high heels and cleats in any rooms with hardwood flooring. These types of shoes can put dents and scratches in to the floor that will require a professional to help resuscitate your floors back to their former glory. Create a mudroom area in your home with a bench and shoe rack. This will make it easy for your family members to follow the no shoe rule. Investing in a mat that catches water and slush run off from shoes on bad weather days is also a great way to prevent water damage to your floors. Sweep your floors daily to catch any dirt they may have found itís way into your home and onto your hardwood floors. Vacuum once a week for a more thorough clean. Once a month you will want to clean your floors with a microfiber cloth and light mist of water. Ensure that you do not soak your floors as water can cause them to swell and become damaged with time. Avoid cleaners for tile or vinyl surfaces and never steam clean your hardwood floors. Install felt pads to the bottoms of any furniture you have in rooms with hardwood flooring. This will help prevent scratches from everyday furniture use. You will want to regularly replace these pads however since dirt can build up on the bottoms and create a sandpaper-like surface that can lead to damage. When rearranging furniture lift the piece off the floor to carry it over to where you would like it placed and then carefully set it down instead of pushing it across your hardwood floors. While this may entail extra help from a family member to do, it will prevent unsightly gashes along your floors from dragging your furniture across the room. Original flooring in an old New England home is a major selling point for many homebuyers. Restoring old hardwood floors to their original condition can be pricey, however, by taking preliminary measures to prevent damage you can avoid bringing an expert in to fix your mistakes. And when all it takes to maintain your floors is a few minutes each day itís a win-win situation!
